Satoshi Kuwata from Setchu Takes Home Fashion's Esteemed Award
Satoshi Kuwata, the founder of Setchu fashion brand, has emerged victorious by claiming the highly prestigious award in the world of fashion.
Satoshi Kuwata, the visionary behind Setchu fashion brand, has emerged as the winner of the highly esteemed 2023 LVMH Prize for Young Designers. This renowned accolade, celebrating its 10th year, serves as a gateway to a flourishing career in the fashion industry. The prize recipients were announced on June 7th.
Hosted by LVMH, the world's largest luxury goods conglomerate, the event witnessed fierce competition among over 2,400 aspiring designers from 15 different countries, all vying for the coveted title of this year's LVMH Prize recipient.
At the age of 39, Kuwata triumphed and was awarded a substantial cash prize of 400,000 euros (equivalent to 62 million yen or $435,200). His journey to success began with humble origins, working as a sales clerk at a Beams clothing shop. He later ventured to London in 2004, where he joined Huntsman, a prestigious tailor on the renowned Savile Row, and pursued studies at Central Saint Martins college, affiliated with the University of the Arts. Kuwata further honed his skills through valuable experiences with Gareth Pugh and Givenchy.
Eventually settling in Milan, Italy, he established his own brand, unveiling his inaugural collection for the 2021 spring/summer season. His genderless brand beautifully fuses elements of Japanese and Western aesthetics, incorporating designs inspired by the art of origami.
Expressing his aspirations, Kuwata shared, "My dream is to etch my brand's name into the annals of history. I aim to create designs that transcend borders, blending cultures seamlessly."
