Seattle Police Arrest Man After Armed Standoff at Capitol Hill Fitness Center
On Wednesday night, a man was taken into custody by Seattle police following an armed standoff at a fitness center located in the 400 block of Broadway East. The incident unfolded at approximately 7 p.m. when officers from both the East and West precincts responded to reports of an individual wielding a gun.
Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that a man was being held at gunpoint, the result of a dispute with another individual who was armed with a handgun. To ensure the safety of the surrounding area, patrol units swiftly secured the scene while the SWAT team and Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) were called in for assistance.
Through effective communication established by the HNT, the suspect eventually complied, enabling the SWAT team to move in safely and apprehend him without further incident. Following the arrest, the fitness center was thoroughly searched and secured by the SWAT team to ensure normal operations could resume without risk.
During the standoff, customers inside the fitness center took shelter until it was deemed safe for them to evacuate. Unfortunately, a few minors sustained injuries during the incident, prompting the response of Seattle Fire, who provided necessary medical aid to those in need.
The 42-year-old suspect has been booked into the King County Jail on charges of assault and unlawful imprisonment. The firearm involved in the incident will undergo further investigation and be subjected to probationary measures.
