Tamal Mitra: The Story of an Urban Farmer on a Mission for Food Security via Organic Farming.
Urban Farmer, Tamal Mitra, Takes on Food Security Challenge with Organic Farming
Traditionally considered an unattractive profession, farming plays a vital role in providing us with food, sustenance, and the energy to innovate. However, farmers often find themselves at the mercy of external factors.
In this news piece, we highlight the inspiring journey of Mr. Tamal Mitra, an urban farmer and founder of Dr Agro. Despite a professional background in IT and entrepreneurship, Tamal developed a profound interest in farming due to an alarming realization: the world is heading towards a severe food shortage in the next decade, with India at risk.
Taking matters into his own hands, Tamal embraced natural farming techniques on 20 acres of land near Delhi, expanding his operations every month by 5 to 10 acres. He also collaborated with 2500 farmers in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, focusing on staple crops and lentil farming using organic and natural processes to provide chemical-free food.
Tamal's passion for agriculture and nature led him to transform vacant urban spaces, rooftops, and unused lands into productive green areas. His urban farm not only aimed to grow food sustainably but also fostered a sense of community. Tamal's innovative approaches included rainwater harvesting, vertical gardening, and other sustainable practices to address urban farming challenges.
Despite facing obstacles like weather fluctuations, pest management, and economic pressures, Tamal's perseverance paid off. His urban farm became a gathering place, an educational hub, and a local source of fresh produce in the Delhi/NCR region.
Looking ahead, Tamal's vision for the future of urban farming involves creating more green spaces in cities and advocating for supportive urban farming policies. His journey serves as a testament to the power of passion, determination, and community engagement, inspiring others to embrace urban farming for greener and more sustainable cities for generations to come.
