"Apple Vision Pro Game Development Tool by Unity Now Available in Beta"
Unity has launched the beta version of its Apple Vision Pro Game Development Tool, allowing developers to create and port 3D experiences for Apple's "spatial computing" platform.
Unity has launched the beta version of its development platform, PolySpatial, designed to support 3D experiences for Apple's visionOS "spatial computing" platform. The platform aims to streamline the development process with familiar workflows for Unity Engine users. Marc Whitten, Unity Create president, acknowledged the challenges in building apps for a hardware device like the Vision Pro headset, which promises a paradigm shift in computing.
During the WWDC keynote, Apple focused on office, creative workflows, and enterprise applications for the Vision Pro rather than gaming experiences. However, gaming is a crucial driver for any computing platform, and the availability of unique gaming experiences is expected to play a significant role in the Vision Pro's success.
PolySpatial will likely be utilized to port existing titles to the new platform initially, as creating new experiences from scratch demands more resources. Triband, the developer of "What the Golf?", a game launched on Apple Arcade, has already begun using PolySpatial to port the title.
Unity is inviting developers to join the beta in waves, with no specific timeline for the public release of PolySpatial. The company is working closely with creators throughout the process to gather feedback and improve the platform's workflow and support. The aim is to ensure a rich library of content for the Vision Pro before its official release next year.
