Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has announced the global expansion of Instagram subscriptions for eligible creators. Starting with the United States in January 2022, the subscriptions will now be available to creators in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom over the next few weeks.

Instagram subscriptions provide creators with the opportunity to offer exclusive content, such as posts, Live videos, Stories, reels, and highlights, to their followers in exchange for a monthly fee. Subscribers receive a special badge, distinguishing them in the comments section and creators' inboxes.

To qualify for Instagram subscriptions, creators must have at least 10,000 followers and be at least 18 years old. They can choose from eight different price points, ranging from $0.99 to $99.99 per month, based on what they believe their content is worth.

The aim of this feature is to enable creators to generate a recurring monthly income by receiving support from their dedicated fanbase. Meta plans to continue expanding access to Instagram subscriptions worldwide in the coming months.

In a blog post, Meta highlighted that Instagram subscriptions allow creators to foster stronger connections with their most engaged followers within the same platform where they already interact. The company also expressed its commitment to investing in tools that help creators monetize their content, promising further updates in the future.

Meta initially introduced subscriptions on Facebook in 2020 before extending the feature to Instagram. On Facebook, subscriptions are available to Pages in numerous countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the United States, and many others.

Instagram's move into creator subscriptions isn't unique, as other social media platforms like TikTok and Twitter also provide similar options. TikTok's "Series" feature allows eligible creators to offer collections of premium content behind a paywall, while Twitter offers subscription-based access to exclusive tweets from creators.
