New Research Unveils Facebook and Instagram's Impact on Political Behavior: A Collaboration Between Meta and Academic Experts
Recently published research delves deep into the realm of political behavior within Facebook and Instagram, two influential online platforms where individuals express and engage with their political beliefs. The comprehensive studies, consisting of four papers featured in prestigious journals Science and Nature, closely analyze user behavior on both platforms during the 2020 U.S. election period.
These groundbreaking papers, the initial wave of many yet to come, originate from the 2020 Facebook and Instagram Election Study (FIES), a remarkable partnership between Meta and the academic research community. Spearheaded by University of Texas Professor Talia Jomini Stroud from the Center for Media Engagement and NYU's Professor Joshua A. Tucker, co-director of the Center for Social Media and Politics, the project aims to shed light on various aspects of social media's role in shaping political discourse.
Among the diverse and intricate findings, one study particularly focuses on the prevalence of ideological echo chambers on Facebook. Researchers sought to understand the extent to which users were exposed solely to content that aligned with their political views. The analysis revealed that Facebook serves as a socially and informationally segregated space, surpassing previous research on internet news consumption based on browsing behavior.
Notably, two significant findings emerged from the data. First, content posted in Facebook Groups and Pages exhibited much greater "ideological segregation" than content shared by users' friends. This finding aligns with concerns raised by experts about the role of these features in disseminating misinformation and fueling extremism, including dangerous movements like QAnon and anti-government militias. The study also highlighted a striking asymmetry in the distribution of false information, with a larger share of conservative political content being deemed false by Meta's third-party fact-checking system.
Another experiment, conducted with Meta's collaboration, involved replacing algorithmic feeds on Facebook and Instagram with a reverse chronological feed, a format often advocated by those critical of the platforms' addictive designs. Surprisingly, this alteration had no significant impact on users' political sentiments, offline political engagement, or political knowledge. However, it did lead to a notable decrease in the time users spent on the platforms, underscoring Meta's strategy of boosting engagement through algorithmically curated content.
These findings represent only a glimpse of the current research results, with many more papers slated for publication. While Meta has presented the outcomes as a triumph, some experts view this perspective as an oversimplification of the complex findings. Nevertheless, this data forms a crucial foundation for future studies on social media's impact on society.
