Fashion Show in Congo Promotes Peace and Unity Amidst Conflict
In her workshop in Goma, Congo, fashion designer Flore Mfuanani Nsukula puts the finishing touches on her latest collection, using fashion as a powerful medium to convey a message to the world. With every pin, stitch, and iron, she aims to express the emotions and experiences of her country. Congo has been plagued by long-standing conflict as various armed groups battle for control over valuable mineral resources, resulting in widespread violence, mass killings, and a refugee crisis.
On Saturday, the ninth edition of the Liputa fashion show took place, serving as an opportunity to inspire peace and foster coexistence throughout Africa. "Africans must stand united. While we celebrate our vast cultural diversity, it should bring us closer together," emphasized Cameroonian fashion designer Délia Ndougou, who showcased a collection inspired by her nation's flag.
Chadrac Lumumba, a creative stylist from Kinshasa, echoed the sentiment, stating, "Our intention was to convey joy, peace, and a vibrant spirit through the clothing—a way to bring smiles to the world." The event in Goma featured designers, models, and artists from countries such as Cameroon, Senegal, Burundi, France, and the United States.
Nsukula expressed hope for improvement as she reflected on the show's success, saying, "The participation of individuals from various places like the Central African Republic, Cameroon, the USA, and France signifies that there is hope and security. With time, the situation will improve."
In addition to showcasing Congo's fashion industry, the event aimed to present a positive image of the continent as a whole. Organizer David Ngulu explained, "Through these collections, we not only promote the visions of these creators but also demonstrate that in Africa, even in areas marked by conflict, such as Congo, we can achieve remarkable things just like peaceful countries."
The Liputa fashion show served as a beacon of hope, using fashion as a tool for transformation and unity, while striving to reshape perceptions of Africa.
