Bard, Google's Multilingual Chatbot, Successfully Rolls Out in the EU, Expanding Language Support to Over 40 New Languages
Google's Bard Chatbot Expands to EU, Adds Support for 40+ Languages
Google is set to launch its ChatGPT competitor, Bard, to a broader user base, introducing the generative AI chatbot in over 40 languages and finally making it available in the European Union (EU) following initial delays caused by data privacy concerns.
In addition, Google has unveiled a range of new features for Bard, albeit some of them initially being limited to English.
Google first teased Bard in February, seemingly as a quick response to the growing popularity of ChatGPT, a highly intelligent search engine/chatbot developed by OpenAI, an AI company supported by Google's competitor, Microsoft.
Although Bard initially offered early access with an English version in the United States and the United Kingdom from March, the waitlist ended in May with a global rollout across approximately 180 countries, including support for Japanese and Korean. Notably, the EU launch was postponed by Google due to concerns expressed by a privacy regulator. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), responsible for data protection in the EU region when companies choose Ireland as their European headquarters, stated that Google had informed them about Bard's EU launch plans but had not provided sufficient information to address their data privacy concerns.
